![]() ![]() However, it's totally worth it to see these spectacular falls up close from the outcrop viewing area. A short trail leads to the boardwalk which is listed at 200 steps down and what goes down must come up so be ready for the climb back to the top. Blackwater Falls can be seen from the overlook behind the lodge but for the best view you need to drive or hike over to the Boardwalk. Both, Elkala and Yellow Birch trails begin at the lodge. I'd guess it's more like 3 miles winding back and forth through the woods but it is not as rough as the Elakala Trail. The Yellow Birch Trail is listed at 1 mile but I think that is measured as the crow flies or as the highway runs nearby. The Gentle Trail is just that, gentle, fit for even the youngest hiker and ends with a spectacular view of the valley that you won't want to miss. The side path down to Elakala Falls was very steep but once down, you had a great view of these falls. Plan to keep your eyes down on the path to avoid tripping and taking a nasty spill. The Elakala Trail was a bit rough with lots and lots of protruding roots and stones. We hiked four trails at Blackwater Falls in the 18 hours we were there. DO NOT USE GOOGLE because it will wind you around for over 50 extra miles. I have absolutely no regrets staying here and I absolutely would stay again.įirst: Get yourself a paper map and follow all the main roads to reach this park. I know I put a lot of negatives in this review but that is just how it was. Then another set of workers came and shoveled the sidewalk. ![]() ![]() We got back and were getting firewood and the cabin driveway got plowed. We set out for a walk and discovered that the road was plowed. The cabins are located in a beautiful area and there are enough trees that each cabin is pretty private and not on top of each other. There are many trails around to hike and a lot of areas to go cross country skiing. Everything was in new to gently used condition. There is an assortment of cooking utensils. There is a full size electric stove, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, tea kettle, toaster, pots and pans, dishes and flatware. The huge pieces are hard to light and you need some fire starter like “strike a fire.” I would recommend bringing something to split the wood down because the pieces are quite large and most are not dry. We chipped off all the ice and it got warmer in the cabin. When the fan would run, and I don’t understand why it was, the fan wouldn’t spin and it would buzz or it would spin and make a loud clicking sound because the fan was making contact with the ice. The ice was built up on the heat pump outside. The ice is definitely a problem and likely not an easy one to solve. Our back door wasn’t usable due to the large amount of ice covering the deck. The cabins seem poorly insulated and every cabin had huge ice jams in the gutters with icicles. Because of the low pressure, it took a while to get hot water for dishes. The water pressure is extremely low, lower then what is typically in a hotel. It was very clean except for a few cobwebs up in the corners. It slept 4 but there was also a roll away bed. ![]()
